Would you like to ride a horse safely but don’t have one yet?

Follow this old horseman’s advice. You don’t need an expensive trainer to get started — you just need the right information and a good horse.

Here’s what I recommend:

1. Decide what you want to do with the horse. Before you buy, be clear about your goals — trail riding, arena work, competition, or just enjoying time with your horse.

2. Buy a horse that has been ridden for at least five years with no bad habits. Look for one that stands still when you mount, doesn’t step on your feet, doesn’t rear up, and is generally calm and reliable. A seasoned horse will keep you safer while you learn.

3. Get a copy of my training manual, Confident Horseback Riding. This manual gives you step-by-step instructions. Combine it with my technique and the Ragusin Collection Bungee Reins, and you’ll be training your horse safely and effectively.

4. Choose the right horse for your discipline.

  • For Western events, a Quarter Horse type with a short back and strong stifle muscle is usually best.
  • For English riding, you may want a horse with a longer back, such as a Standardbred type.

I have over 50 free training videos on my website and YouTube channel. They’re all free to watch.

My personal cell number is listed on the site. You can call me anytime between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Central Time, seven days a week. The call is free.

One important note: Don’t take training advice from someone without real credentials. If a trainer has never competed in professionally sanctioned shows, it’s like taking medical advice from someone who has never been to medical school.

With my website, free videos, and Confident Horseback Riding manual, you can get started training your own horse for less than $300 total.

You’ll be training both your horse and yourself at the same time.

Good luck, and feel free to reach out anytime.
